+ Shades of Gray +

We’ve been experiencing a bit of weather lately around Southern California (More on that in a future post).  As always, the first rain of the year brings madness among the people.  The past few days I decided to take advantage of the storm in every way possible.  I took two different approaches to this storm, I hit the water, and the snow, all within 2 days.  Anyone who is an avid surfer in San Diego knows that the conditions have been all-time the past couple days.  There has been a slight break in the storm which allowed for calm winds and the heavy swell brought some excellent surf.

After enjoying myself in some epic Oceanside Barrels on Wednesday, my friends and I took a quick trip to the mountains.  Big Bear to be exact.  I have always had a special place in my heart for Bear Mountain.  I grew up riding there, and I continue to go back season after season.  With all the fresh snow from Monday, they had an opportunity to shape up the park a little bit.  The jumps were looking good, and the features were fun.  Overall it was a great day of boarding.  We were lucky enough to have bright and sunny skies the entire day!  Here are a few photos from the past few days.

This shot was taken on 12-11-09 at Swami’s in Encinitas.  The surf was all time, and it was looking just about as good as it can get out there.  As always, there was a solid pack of outstanding surfers in the water.

This is a secret spot in San Diego.  When I stopped to check the surf here, there was only about 5-7 guys out, and the sets were reeling through non-stop.  It was a great day to be in the water!

This shot was taken in Encinitas, CA at a lonely beach break.  Most of the waves coming through here were a bit closed out, but every now and then a nice peak would come through offering a nice slow, peeling wall.

This shot was taken in the early morning light outside our cabin in Big Bear.  It was 15 degrees at night making for some icy cold mornings.

Last, but not least, here is a night shot of the cabin we stayed in.  I look forward to spending a lot of time here this winter!

If you are interested in seeing the entire gallery of photos I took at Swami’s, click on the photo above.  Surf Shot was nice enough to feature my gallery on the homepage for a limited time.  Enjoy!
