+ G-Technology ‘G-Safe’ Review +

Lately I find myself filling up hard drive space very quickly.  Between the Apple Pro Res 422 video files and the 18 megapixel raw photos, external drives seem to fill up as fast as I purchase them.  This left me in need of something that could handle the large files I need to store.  With a couple of large video projects starting up (more on that in a future post), I decided it was time to invest in a good external storage system.  I landed on this nice little set-up by G-Technology called the G-Safe.

The G-Safe is a hard drive enclosure that is available in 3 different sizes (500GB, 1TB and 2TB).  It houses two hard drives that are set up in a Raid 1 configuration, which means they are exact copies of each other.  As you probably already know hard drives fail, and redundancy is key when storing valuable video and photo files.  The G-Safe makes this extremely easy.  Simply plug it in via firewire 800 or USB 2.0 (or firewire 400 with the proper 800->400 cable) and you are ready to start backing up!  It works the same as any other normal external drive without the pain of copying your files to two separate drives manually.  The G-Safe does all the work for you.

With the purchase of the G-Safe I decided to purchase two spare drives to use incase of a failure or incase I fill the primary drives.  Spare drives are always good to have on hand.  The drives are extremely easy to swap out.  When a drive fails, the G-Safe sounds off a small beeping alarm to notify the user.  You swap out the failed drive for a new one, and the G-Safe automatically copies the files to the new drive.  The 1 TB G-Safe retails at $469.99 – a small price to pay for piece of mind knowing your valuable files will be safe!

Here are a few quick facts about the G-Technology G-Safe:

G-Technology Hardware RAID 1 (data mirroring) – automatically backs up files as you save them
G-Technology 3Gbit eSATA, FireWire 800 and USB 2.0 connectivity
G-Technology Front panel LCD for configuration and monitoring health of system

G-Technology Internal 70W power supply
G-Technology Unique industrial design, compact all aluminum enclosure

G-Technolody has a reputation for making extremely high quality products.  I wouldn’t hesitate to purchase more of their hardware in the future.  I currently also use one of their 500GB drives to back up my iMac with Time Machine.  I have been using this drive for over two years now without any problems.  I also own two of their 250GB mini drives for field and travel use.  I plan to buy many more G-Tech drives in the future!
